Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild: Bee Chat (Virtual)

Bee Chat: The Space to Chit, Chat, Pipe, and Bu

On the first Tuesday of the month, hang out in our virtual forum to talk about all things bees. From what’s blooming to who’s flying, all questions and levels of experience are welcome here. We’re often fielding questions on feeding, swarming, pest control, and harvesting depending on the time of year, but also we’re sharing notes across our region. Feel free to bring your photos and observations about unusual behavior and climate impacts.

Amelia Mraz and Meghan Robertson – the impact of beekeeping on the well-being of older adults – Guild Monthly Meeting – Third Thursday

“Our November meeting will feature Amelia Mraz of Half Mad Honey and Meghan Robertson, a graduate of Temple University’s Doctor of Occupational Therapy program. They will be presenting on thier research study on the impact of beekeeping on the wellbeing of older adults.

Amelia fell in love with beekeeping in 2016, when she impulsively signed up for a beekeeping class at Temple University. She was really struggling with her mental health at the time, and beekeeping grew to become a meditative and grounding practice, and true therapeutic outlet. As a public health and mental health worker (BS, MPH), she believes that therapy needs to be expanded outside of clinical settings. Half Mad Honey is dedicated to creating awareness surrounding mental health and wellness, and providing a safe space for all people to learn about bees, build confidence, and connect with peers and nature.”

Leisurely Leafy Fall Fun at Awbury

“Join us for a relatively quick and easy hike along the Farm side of Awbury Arboretum’s grounds, as well as for some leisure fall fun activities.  We’ll stroll along the trail, where we’ll explore and seek out items that are listed on our kid-friendly scavenger hunt sheets. Once we’re done, we can play a few rounds of BINGO, as well as provide wooden leaf ornaments for kids to color/decorate.  Throughout the program, participants are welcome to view the goats, chickens, pollinator gardens, beekeeper hives, and trails, on their own, allowing time to enjoy at your leisure.  We cannot guarantee that the animals will be out, since they are managed by partner organizations of Awbury Arboretum.”
